Les bagarres de Toulon, Keystone Press Agency Paris, gelatin silver print, August 1935, 12 x 16 cm.

Hit by the recession in the early 1930s, the French government’s economic measures to deal with financial crisis caused nationwide wage cuts, leading to a series of riots in Paris, Brest and Toulon in early August 1935. In this photo taken in Toulon, the southern port, shop windows on the street are all broken by protesters. The shortest one among the young men may not even be a teenager. No chance to go to school or work, he enjoys doing anything with his elder friends. Still pondering if he should grab something from the shop, he is already content with his own courage to smash the window.
