This is a photo of Mr. Nakajima’s father taken at a scenic spot in Kagoshima as part of a weeklong tour around Kyushu Island, Japan. It was March, and the weather seemed very warm to them as they came from further north. The gentleman dressed in black behind Mr. Nakajima Senior did not nd it overly warm as he was not a tourist but a resident of Kagoshima. He worked for a large distillery and was a member of the marketing staff. Their shochu was sold all over Japan, and traders visited them frequently to purchase it. Part of his job was to receive traders and other visitors. This morning he had given a tour of the distillery to a businessman from Hokkaido, who is next to him in the photo. After this he had taken him sightseeing and they had been to a variety of locations. They had had some interesting conversations and they had ranged over a number of topics. Just at this moment, and in front of this beautiful landscape, the gentleman in black had been asked, unexpectedly, about his love life. He felt somewhat embarrassed by the question and responded vaguely and hesitantly while rubbing his neck with his hand.
這是中島先生父親參加「九州一周之旅」，遊經鹿兒島時拍照留念。此際三月，這些來 自九州以北的遊客可以提早感受在家鄉還未到之溫暖，只是中島先生父親身後一位男 士，還是穿上全套西裝，似乎沒有感到半點暖意。他其實是鹿兒島的居民，在當地的 一家大酒莊任職營銷，他們的產品暢銷全國，經常有來自不同縣市的經銷商來拜訪他 們的酒莊，他的工作就包括接待這些訪客。今天早上他已經讓身旁這位來自北海道的 經紀參觀過酒莊，之後就帶他到處觀光。他們一路閒聊不同話題，來到這天涯海角， 西裝男竟被問及個人感情生活，一時感到尷尬，只懂掃著頸背，支吾以對。

この写真は、九州への一週間ほどのツアーで訪れた、鹿児島の観光スポットで中島 さんの父を写した一枚である。3 月のこの時期は、北国から来た観光客にとっては 暖かかった。だが中島さんの父の後ろのほうにいる黒で身を包んだ男性はそう感じ てはいなかった。彼は鹿児島の地元民で、観光客ではなかった。彼は大きな酒造会 社のマーケティング部門で働いていた。その会社の焼酎は日本全国で売られていて、 至る所から仲買人が訪ねてきていた。そうした訪問者を迎えるのも彼の仕事の一つ だった。今朝も、北海道から来たビジネスマン(彼のとなりにいる男性)に焼酎造 りの見学をさせたところだった。そのあとに観光をしてもらおうといろいろな場所 を訪れながら、いくらか興味深い会話もして、様々な話題について意見を交わした。 ちょうどこの瞬間、壮観な景色を前にして、黒で身を包んだ男性は不意に彼の恋愛 関係について尋ねられた。恥ずかしさもあって、ためらいがちにはぐらかす彼の、 その手は首元を無意識に触っていた。
