This is a photo of a moment during the exhibition of Hyakunin Isshu (One Hundred People, One Poem Each), a creative adaptation of the classical literary form by a group of students, when the leading contributors celebrated with their teacher. In the photo there is another teacher who stands at the side on the left. He had recently joined this school as part of the public school personnel rotation system and was as yet unfamiliar with his colleagues and students. Also, because of his rather subtle personality, people regarded him as being very serious all the time. However he was passionate about education, particularly the policy to promote better teaching and learning for schools in remote areas. It was an embarrassing moment; he had just entered to the room, but was not yet invited for the photographs. He decided instead to concentrate on the poems.
上鄕中學的學生參與一人一句撰寫的原創「百人一首」在學校展示。相中學生應該是 表現優秀者，與老師合照紀念。站在左邊一旁的老師是因為人事輪調制度在這個新學 年才開始在校任教，同事和同學對他都頗陌生，而且他的性格較為內儉，時常給人嚴 肅的感覺 ;但他其實熱衷教學，特別關心如何提升偏遠學校的教學水平。此際他剛到 來看同學的創作，卻未被邀請合照，一時尷尬，故作專注欣賞作品狀。

この写真は、百人一首大会で句を考える企画において、とくに独創的だった生徒た ちを表彰したときに撮られた一枚だ。左側に、一人の教師が立っている。彼はこの 年、この公立中学校に赴任してきたばかりで、同僚や生徒とはまだそれほど親しく なかった。また彼の気質もあってか、気難しい人だと思われていた。けれども彼は 教育に情熱を持った人で、とりわけ地方の学校でより良い教育を行っていこうとい う使命感のようなものがあった。この時はちょっと見学をしようとしただけで、彼 自身、写真に入る予定ではなかったという、そんな彼が赤面してしまうような瞬間 なのだ。だから彼は壁の作品に集中しようと心に決めたのだった。
