After visiting the statue of Takamori Saigo, Mr. Nakajima’s father had returned to the tour bus with his colleagues. On the way he spotted a small group of female secondary school students under a plum tree. The one with her back to the camera was discussing issues with her friends around their post graduation plans. She was the eldest daughter of her family and had always been an independent spirit. She loved photography and was keen to further her studies in Tokyo and pursue a career like the journalist Saburou Kawamoto and the photographer Hiroshi Hamaya. However, her father believed that girls should simply further their studies in a specialised training college and then start working. If her mother had not helped to distract her father this morning she would not have been able to join the group. It probably would be the last outing with her friends before they all graduated.

西郷隆盛像を見た後、中島さんの父は彼の同輩と観光バスに戻った。その途中、数 人の女子高生が梅の木の下にいるのを、彼は見た。カメラに背を向けているひとり の少女は友人と卒業後の進路について話していた。一家の長女として、彼女にはい つも自立心があった。彼女は写真を撮ることが好きで、東京で写真をもっと勉強し て、ジャーナリストの川本三郎や写真家の濱谷浩のようなキャリアを歩みたいと考 えていた。けれども彼女の父親は、女子は専門学校に行ってなるべく早く職に就く ものだと考えていた。この朝も母親が父の気を逸らしてくれなければ、この外出を することもできなかった。おそらくこれが友達と外に出かける最後の機会になった ことだろう。
