One Hundred Years of Tsunan, Book, Tsunan District Office, 1977, 29 × 21 cm, Kamigo High School Collection

The lower picture on page 71 is a photograph taken in the 1930s of a horse with a shoiko (backpack) guided by a groom. In the early Showa period horse and manpower were often the only means of transportation availabile in rural and mountainous areas. Shoiko were an essential tool for this purpose. On the left there is a farmer with a senaka-ate (a grass cushion for carrying heavyweights). On this day the farmer had already walked for hours. He was carrying a heavy load of rice for sale at the market and was now returning. Because of the economic depression the price of rice had dropped substantially. Even with a good harvest it was difficult to make money. He had exhausted his savings and it was now increasingly difficult to support his family. Extremely exhausted under the midday sun, and with his steps becoming unstable, he began to have weird thoughts of selling his daughter.
