This photograph was taken by a school teacher in the playground behind the school after the annual sports gala. Each year the gala was highly anticipated by many of the students, particularly the cheerleaders who developed many routines and chants for the athletes. This was a happy time for most, except one who quietly sat on a drum at the right hand side of the picture. He had deliberately turned away from the camera to hide his sorrow. This morning his beloved Shiba Inu, a dear companion for 13 years, had died. Despite his tremendous sadness he had forced himself to attend the gala as this was his last opportunity to be a cheerleader before he graduated. With no idea where he would be next year, his feelings were now more complicated than ever.
照片攝於校舍後方的操場上，就在周年學校體育祭(運動會)完結後，由老師所拍。 許多同學都期待體育祭來臨，特別是應援團(啦啦隊)眾人，都會上下一心，練就出 很多花樣的動作和口號為參賽選手打氣。本來大伙兒都該盡興，滿載愉悅，只是一位 在照片右方的同學默言獨坐於戰鼓上，刻意逃避鏡頭，不讓我們看到他的愁容。這天 早上陪伴了他十三年的柴犬去世了，他傷心得很，但還得忍著淚跑回來為選手歡呼。 他想到這回也是自己最後一年參與運動會，還沒有什麼畢業後的計劃，下一年的今天會 在哪裡呢?此刻更是百感交集。

学校の先生が、体育祭のあと学校の裏の運動場でこの写真を撮った。毎年、体育祭 はたくさんの生徒によって活気あふれたものになるが、なかでもチアリーダーたち は競技者のために歌やスローガンをいくつも作った。ほとんどの生徒にとって楽し い時間だった。ただ右の方でドラムの上にぼんやり座っている生徒だけは違った。 この日の朝、彼がとても愛していた柴犬が、13 年ものあいだ連れ添った柴犬が、 息を引き取った。そんな大きな悲しみにもかかわらず彼はこの行事に参加すること を決めた。というのも、これが卒業前の彼にとってチアリーダーをする最後の機会 だったのだ。来年、自分がどこにいるかなど到底知る由もないまま、これまでにな いくらい彼の心は混乱していた。
