This free magazine promotes tourism in Echigo-Yuzawa. The cover photo is the Fifty Sixth Miss Komako, a beauty pageant named after the protagonist in the novel Snow Country by the Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata. This photo captures a scene of cherry-blossoms on the shores of the Daigenta River where a father and a son are hiking. The father was a computer programmer. His wife had passed away when the boy was still a toddler. He then began to work as a freelancer so he could have more time to look after his son. They had lived in Tokyo but had recently moved to his hometown in Niigata Prefecture. One reason for this was because of the high rents and the increasing cost of living in Tokyo. Another was that he felt his son needed a new environment as he had not got along with his classmates when he went to junior high school. Now the son had both the care of his grandparents and also the pleasure of being much closer to nature.

これは、越後湯沢の観光を推進するフリーマガジンの表紙で、第 56 代ミス駒子の 写真だ。ミス駒子は、ノーベル文学賞を受賞した川端康成の小説「雪国」の主人公 にちなんだ美人コンテストの受賞者のことである。この見開きページは、桜の咲く 大源太川沿いを父と息子がハイキングしている瞬間を撮影したものだ。父はコンピ ュータープログラマーで、彼の妻は少年がまだ赤ちゃんだったときに亡くなった。 それから彼は、息子を育て、ともにいる時間を優先するために、フリーランスとし て活動を始めた。彼らはもともと東京に住んでいたが、都会は住居費と生活費が高 いので、最近、故郷である新潟県に移り住んだ。彼の息子が中学校に進学した際、 同級生と気が合わず、新しい環境が必要だったという理由もある。息子は祖父母か らも愛され慈しまれながら、とても多くの自然を楽しんでいた。
