In the upper left corner of this page is a re-run of an old news story. The snowfall in January 1961 was unusually high. It was close to four times that of the previous year and was the highest ever recorded. This photo was taken in the main shop- ping area of Niigata City. The person standing in the foreground was a local shop owner. The shops in this area had been closed for several days owing to the heavy snowfalls. The shop owner had been working with other volunteers since yesterday to build a gutter system to help remove the snow from the roofs of houses in the area. A reporter from outside of Niigata City had come to report on a story about people who were missing in the snow. He asked to take photographs of the snow removal work. The shop keeper found it strange that a simple operation like this would make it into a newspaper.
版面左上角有舊日新聞重溫，昭和 36 年一月降雪量特別高，接近去年的四倍，是當時 有紀錄以來最高的。相片攝於新潟市本町街區，站在最前面是此區的商販。因為連場 豪雪，商店街已有多天不能營業了。他從昨天起便與一眾區民義工架搭起數十米長的 「雪樋」，正忙於清走這一帶房頂上的積雪。這天有個外來記者為了採訪大雪下的失踪 事件而來，看到他們除雪的工作，就要求讓他拍攝。他只是感到奇怪，怎麼這樣平常 的事情也可以當新聞材料。

このページの左上には、過去のニュースが再掲載された。1961 年 1 月の降雪は異 常に高く、前年度のほぼ 4 倍、観測至上最高に達した。この写真は新潟市の主要な 商店街で撮影されたものだ。前側に立っている人は地元の店主だった。この地域の 商店は、大雪の影響で数日は閉店していた。彼はこの地域の家の屋根から雪を取り 除く作業のために、他のボランティアと協力して、雪樋を使った除雪方法を考案し た。この日、県外から来た記者は、大雪の下にいる行方不明者の取材で訪れていた。 彼は除雪作業に関する写真を撮るか尋ねた。地元の店主は、なぜこんなにも普通の 作業が新聞記事になるのか奇妙に思った。
