Mother and Child, Gelatin silver print, 1964, 11.1 x 7.7 cm, Hisakazu Ishizawa Collection

This photograph is of Mr. Ishizawa with his mother when he was a baby. It was taken by his father when they all celebrated the tulip festival in Niigata. There was a young man in a white shirt walking in the blossoming field who had originally come from Uonuma . After he had finished junior high school he had studied at the Commercial High School in Niigata. When he graduated he found a job in a bank. Everything had gone well for him and he enjoyed his life in Niigata. However his father had been ill for six months and his mother had been asking him to return home to help out in the family’s rice business. He had finally decided to leave next month and go help his mother. So this flower celebration for him had become a way to bid farewell to the city. Soon after his departure Niigata experienced a magnitude 7.5 earthquake. This could be seen as a very fortunate and narrow escape for him.
