A Visit of the Nursery School to Zenkoji Temple, C-print, 1976, 17.7 x 12.6 cm, Yuuji Yamagishi Collection

This is a group photo taken during a visit by the nursery school to Zenkoji Temple in Nagano prefecture. Zenkoji Temple was built in the 7th century and is the largest wooden temple in Japan. The elderly couple, who are standing at the back right hand side, were both devout Buddhists and had come to visit the secret Buddha “Amidasanzon”. Unfortunately they were unable to visit the Buddha as this was not the year for Gokaicyo or “open the curtain”, which only occurs once in every seven years.
