A Snapshot in the Village, Gelatin silver print, c.1963, 9 x 6.6 cm, Shuuichi Ishizawa Collection

This photo, which is a snapshot of a village street scene, used to belong to Mr. Ishizawa’s mother. It is most likely the beginning of April, as much of the snow has melted. In the photo a well-dressed woman in a kimono is walking with a child in the drizzle. They were mother and son and had just come from a school orientation ceremony. (In Japan the new academic year usually begins in April.) The umbrella covered most of their bodies. The mother, with her head down, was talking to her son. Meanwhile her son was excitedly and enthusiastically telling his mother about all the new people he met and things he had found on his first day of school.
