This picture, which includes a young Mr. Kubota, was taken in front of the Imperial Palace at the Seimon Stone Bridge. It was taken during a junior high school graduation tour of Tokyo. Mr. Kubota is second from the left. Students were usually split into groups and the tour itinerary was designed to take into account their different interests. However the student on the right hand side with his back to the camera was not that interested in this photo opportunity and quietly waited for his classmates to have their photo taken. He had already visited the Imperial Palace with his parents when he was younger. Then they could even cross the bridge and enter the grounds on the other side as it was Emperor Hirohito’s birthday. He was not really interested in things historical, but was more interested in the new developments in the capital such as the Shinkansen high-speed rail and the Tokyo Monorail.
這攝於久保田先生中學畢業旅行，在東京皇居正門的石橋前，他就在左面第二位。畢 業旅行的行程安排，通常把同學分成不同小組，讓他們各自前往喜歡的地方參觀。旁 邊背向照相機的一位同學，到訪皇居卻沒有半點興奮，只安靜地等待其他同學先來拍 照留念。其實，他在很小的時候已曾隨父母遊覽過皇居，當年正藉裕仁天皇壽辰，他 更可以走過石橋內進參觀 ;但是他對舊東西的興趣實在不大，只是期待看到首都最新 的建設，包括新幹線和單軌電車。

この写真は皇居の正門石橋の前で撮られた。卒業旅行での東京観光のときのもので、 中学時代の久保田さんも映っている。左から二番目が彼だ。生徒はそれぞれグルー プに分かれて、興味関心に沿って観光の日程を組むことができた。けれども右端の 生徒はカメラに背中を向けながら、楽しげな様子も見せず、クラスメイトが写真に 撮られるのをじっと待っていた。彼は幼い頃すでに、両親とこの場所に来たことが あった。橋を渡って、参賀を行ったその日は、昭和天皇の誕生日だった。しかし彼 はそうした国民的行事に興味がなかった。彼が興味を持っていたのは、新幹線や東 京モノレールのような、首都にある新しい何かだった。
