This photo is of Mr. Kubota’s mother and cousin and was taken before his mother’s marriage. Mr. Kubota’s uncle ran a ramen shop in Tokyo where she would go to help out occasionally. On this particular day she had come to Tokyo and went out for a walk with her father and her brother’s family. Her father took this picture when a leading cadet from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy passed by her. Ever since he was young the cadet had dreamed of traveling overseas and believed being a soldier would help make this dream come true. After graduation, he became a junior officer. In 1937, he travelled to Northeastern China, his first overseas journey. He never returned to Japan.
照中是久保田伸一先生的母親和表姊。當時母親還未婚，她的兄長在東京經營拉麵店， 就時常從長野老家去東京幫忙。這天她又來到東京，與她的父親和兄長家人出遊，父 親興緻很好的要拍照留念，剛在按下快門一刻，她身後的一位「東京士官學校」的陸 軍高材生擦身而過。這位高材生自小渴望能出國大開眼界，他相信參軍可以讓他達成 願望。他畢業後即成為奏任官，1937 年終於第一次出國，被派駐中國東北，始後卻 沒有回國。

この写真には久保田伸一さんの母と彼のいとこが写っている。彼の母の結婚前に撮られた一枚である。当時、彼女の兄(久保田さんの叔父)は東京でラーメン屋を経営していて、彼女はしばしばその手伝いに行っていた。この日も彼女は東京に来ていて、父と兄の家族とで散歩に出かけていた。父がこの写真を撮っていたとき、陸軍士官学校の優秀な候補生が彼女のそばを通り過ぎた。彼は若い頃から、海外を旅することが夢だった。兵隊になれば、それが叶えられると信じていた。卒業後、彼は下級士官になった。1937 年、中国北部に出征して、それが海外へのはじめての旅になった。そして二度と日本に戻ることはなかった。
