In this photo Mr. Moriguchi’s mother walks with her neighbours on a temporary timbered road leading to the Tsunan Elementary School. In earlier days the men of Tsunan would go to work in the big cities during the winter and the women would remain at home and take care of daily life. This included such things as clearing snow, the general maintenance of the house and land, and looking after the elderly and children. These were not easy tasks. Walking with Mr. Moriguchi’s mother at the far right was a friend from her village. She was the toughest. Both her grandparents were sick and she had to spend a lot of time with them. Luckily her children were good and helpful and caused her no worry. Nevertheless she always dressed in plain, dark clothes as she felt her life was a heavy, colourless burden.
這是森口先生母親和幾位鄰居，在通往津南小學校的臨時道路上被拍下的照片，她就 在左起第一位。舊日冬天的津南，家裡的男人都會跑到大城市打工，而婦女則留守家 中負責所有日常工作包括除雪、整修家居、打理土地、照顧老人和孩子等等，是十分吃 力的作業。跟森口先生母親同行最右邊的同鄉姊妹，是最吃得苦的。她家裡的老人家 身體不好，要長時間貼身照顧，幸好孩子都孝順懂事，不用她多操心。只是生活確實 沉重單調，穿的亦總是深色素衣。

この写真には、森口さんの母が友人とともに、津南小学校へ続く材木で出来た臨時 道路を歩いている様子が収められている。かつて津南では、冬の間男たちは大きな 町へ出稼ぎに行った。そのあいだ家に残された女たちは、雪かきなどの作業をこな し、家の周りをきちんとすることを怠らず、義父母や子供の世話をした。それらは もちろん簡単な仕事ではなかった。一番右手にいる女性は、森口さんの母と同じ村 の出身で、4 人のなかで一番丈夫だった。祖母が病気を患っていて、彼女は多くの 時間をその看病に費やした。幸運にも子供らはみな良い子で聞き分けもよく、彼女 を困らせることもなかった。それでも、いつだって暗い色の平凡な服に身を包んで いた彼女は、自分の人生を、重たく、色彩のない荷物のように感じていたのだった。
