Mr. Moriguchi’s grandmother once travelled with her husband to Ise in Mie Prefecture and in this photo she stands at the small bridge outside the Inner Shrine of the Ise Grand Shrine. This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu who is regarded as the ancestor of the Emperors of Japan. The two gentlemen in the background of the picture are also tourists. The one with a hat liked reading, particularly legends and novels. He explained to his friend beside him how Amaterasu was born from the left eye of an earlier god, but his friend was uncertain how her direct descendants, the Emperors, were actually born and wanted to question him about this.

森口さんの祖母は一度、彼の父と一緒に三重県の伊勢を旅行した。この写真では、彼 女は伊勢神宮の内宮の外にある小さな橋に立っている。伊勢神宮は神道の神社で、日 本の皇室の祖先とされる天照大御神を祀っている。写真の背景にいる二人の紳士も観 光客だ。帽子を被っている男性は読書、特に物語や小説が好きだった。彼は友人に、 天照大御神が伊邪那岐命の左目から生まれたことを説明したが、友人は訝しがり、い ったいどのように天照大御神の直接の子孫である天皇が生まれたのか質問した。
