This photo was taken on a ferry operated by the Tokyo Bay Steamer Company during Mr. Yaokichi Fujita’s (at the centre) tour of the Izu Peninsula. The two young men behind him were research assistants from the The University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute. They have been commuting between Izu Oshima and Tokyo regularly to collect data about Mount Mihara an active volcano on the island. The man on the left came from a village on Sakurajima in Kagoshima Prefecture where the 1914 volcanic eruption on the island had killed his grandfather. He admired Professor Takahashi Ryutaro whose studies on Mt. Mihara suggested that, based on the data gathered at the volcano, people could forecast a volcanic eruption in the future and this would save lives.

これは、藤田彌雄吉氏(写真中央)が東京湾汽船で伊豆半 島を旅した際に、その船上で撮影した写真だ。彼の後ろに いるふたりの若者は、東京大学地震研究所の研究助手だっ た。彼らは、活火山である三原火山に関するデータを収集 するために、定期的に東京と伊豆大島を行き来していた。 左の男性は、鹿児島県の桜島出身で、1914年の桜島噴火( 大正大噴火)で、祖父を亡くしていた。彼は、三原山で集め ら れ た デ ー タ に 基 づ い て 、将 来 の 火 山 噴 火 を 予 測 し 、そ れ が人命を救うことに繋がると示唆した高橋龍太郎教授に憧 れていた。
