The photo was taken in front of St. John’s Church when Ms. Takagi’s sister went on a study trip to the Meiji Mura Museum. Meiji Mura, opened in 1965, is an outdoor museum whose mission is to collect and relocate valuable heritage architecture built during the Meiji period. The girl on the left, wearing a dark skirt with a hat in a matching colour, had just turned to appreciate the Romanesque façade with its Gothic style details. She found it very di erent from the Sapporo Telephone Exchange she had visited earlier that day. She was nding architecture interesting but was not sure if it was strange for a woman to be an architect. After all, her sisters were arranging to get married soon after they graduated from school.

この写真は、高木さんの妹が博物館明治村に社会科見学 に行った際に、聖ヨハネ教会前で撮影された。1965年に開 館した明治村は、明治時代に建てられた貴重な建築遺産を 収集し、移築することを目的とした野外博物館である。左側 にいる、暗い色のスカートとそれと合わせた色の帽子を被 った女の子は、細部にゴシック様式のデザインを交えたロ マネスク調の正面入口を鑑賞し始めた。先ほど訪れた札幌 電 話 交 換 局 と は 大 き く 異 な る こ と に 気 づ い た 彼 女 は 、建 築 様式に興味を持った。しかしながら、女性が建築家になる のはおかしいことなのかもしれないとも思った。つまるとこ ろ、彼女の姉たちは、学校を卒業してすぐに結婚する準備 をしていたからだ。
