It was their rst year of business studies and their favourite spare time activity was playing mah-jong. Behind them are a group of law students hanging around the entrance. They were talking about the recent Hungarian Uprising and its subsequent crackdown. Some were outraged by the silence of the Japanese authorities and also the Japanese Communist Party on this. The one holding Takaaki Yoshimoto’s The War Responsibility of the Literati in his left hand was the most outspoken New Leftist in his class. However angry he was he still worked every morning as a pusher at a railway station.

舟橋氏(写真の右から3番目)が、友人たちと一緒に明治 大学の和泉キャンパスから歩いて出てきている。経済につ いて学び始めた最初の年で、趣味は麻雀をすることだっ た。彼らの後ろでは法学部の学生が、入口をうろちょろして いる。彼らは最近のハンガリー動乱と、その後の弾圧につ いて話していた。日本当局や日本共産党の沈黙に憤慨する 声もあった。吉本隆明の「文学者の戦争責任」を左手に持 っているのは、クラスでも特にずけずけ言う新左翼の学生 だ。だが、彼はたとえどんなに憤っていても、毎朝、駅で押 し屋をしていた。
