The Gion Festival in Kyoto is one of the three major festivals in Japan. The rst festival dates back to the 9th Century and is part of a puri cation ritual to appease the god Gozu Tennō, who is believed to be the cause of re, oods and earthquakes. The Yoiyama Parade of Yamaboko Floats is one of the most popular events of the festival. When Mr. Funabashi took a photo of Tamiko in front of the decorated Houkahoko the man standing behind her was also trying to take a picture. He was a reporter with the Kyoto Shimbun and had already taken some shots on Shijo Dori. After years of reporting on this event he found it was becoming harder for him to make an interesting photo series of the festival. He thought it might be the time to shift his attention to the well-dressed tourists rather than the decorated oats.

京都の祇園祭は、日本の三大祭に数えられるほど有名な祭 りだ。祭りの始まりは、9世紀にまで遡り、火事や洪水、地震 の原因だと信じられていた牛頭天王という神様を鎮めるた めの儀式の一部だった。山鉾巡行の宵山(前祭)は、この祭 り で も っ と も 人 気 の あ る イ ベ ン ト の ひ と つ で あ る 。舟 橋 氏 が装飾された放下鉾の前で多美子さんを撮った際、彼女 の後ろに立っていた男性も写真を撮ろうとしていた。彼は、 京都新聞の記者であり、長刀鉾と四条通の菊水鉾をすでに 撮影していた。何年もこのイベントを取材しているうちに、 彼は祭りの面白い写真シリーズを撮り続けるのは難しいと 思い始め、飾り付けられた山鉾よりも、おしゃれをした旅行 客に目を向ける時期かもしれないと考えていた。
