Mother Visiting Nagoya Castle with Her Friends. Gelatin silver print, early 1960s, 9.1 x 12.9 cm, Mari Takagi Collection.

This is a photo of Nagoya Castle taken when the renovations which began in 1958 had been completed. Ms. Takagi’s mother took her best friends from her school days there during their visit with her in Nagoya. On their right is a lady wearing a western suit and carrying a handbag. She came here for a matchmaking date “Omiai”. It had been arranged by her parents but she felt somewhat uncertain about the idea. She had just joined the Toyota Motor Corporation as a junior secretary and felt she had good prospects in the company. She wanted to pursue a career before settling down and marrying.
