In this photo Tamiko, the future Mrs. Funabashi, stands in front of the Statue of Saigo Takamori, the “last true samurai” in Ueno Park during a visit to her brother who was studying at Waseda University in Tokyo. The man sitting behind Tamiko was an amateur historian from Kagoshima and was taking a rest after a long walk. He thought the representation of Takamori in this statue by Takamura Koun was a more genuine re ection of his love of traditional Japanese culture than the earlier painting by Tokonami Masayoshi which depicted him in a western uniform with an European dog instead of an Akita.

多美子さん(将来の舟橋夫人)が、上野恩賜公園にある、” ラストサムライ”こと西郷隆盛の銅像の前に立っている写 真だ。彼女はこの時、早稲田大学で学ぶ兄弟に会うために 東京を訪れていた。多美子さんの後ろに座っている男性は 鹿児島から来たアマチュアの歴史家で、何段もの階段を登 りきって休憩しているところだ。彼は、この高村光雲作の西 郷隆盛の銅像は、それより以前に描かれた、床次正精によ る秋田犬の代わりにヨーロッパの犬を連れて西洋の服を 着ている西郷隆盛の肖像画よりも、伝統的な日本文化に対 する西郷隆盛の愛を真に反映していると語った。
