Children from the Endoji Shopping Street neighbourhood sing carols to celebrate Christmas . Even though named after the Buddhist temple, the shopping street began to celebrate Christmas in the 1960s to help promote the giving of Christmas presents, particularly a Japanese creamy strawberry Christmas cake their shops offered. Endoji even had its own Santa-san. In this photo, the Santa on the left is actually an English college major. He found singing English songs was the best way for him to learn the language. He would sometimes sing Paul Anka’s Christmas in Japan to the children which, however, was really not that popular in Japan.

円頓寺商店街では、クリスマスを祝うために近隣の子どもたちがクリスマス・キャロルを歌っている。この商店街の名前は仏教寺院にちなんで名付けられたのだが、クリスマスプレゼントを贈ることや、日本で始まったクリーミーな苺のクリスマスケーキを宣伝するために、1960年代からクリスマスを祝うようになった。円頓寺にもサンタさんがいたのだ。この写真に写っている左側のサンタは、実は英語を大学で専攻する学生である。彼は、英語を学ぶには英語の歌を歌うことが一番だと気づき、時に、ポール・アンカの「Christmas in Japan」を子どもたちに歌ったが、日本ではあまり人気がなかった。
