Sado Island. Gelatin silver print, 1951, 5.9 x 5.8 cm, Fujita Cosmetics Collection.

Mr. Mitsutaka Fujita made a visit to Sado Island during the summer of 1951. He took this photo of a steam ship at Ryotsu port. In the picture the man in black is excited about his upcoming visit to the Sado Mine, the largest gold mine in Japan. He was Australian born Japanese, and this was his first visit to Japan. Now he was seriously considering moving to Sado, the birthplace of his grandparents who were pearlers who had moved to Northern Australia where they had continued to work as pearlers. He had worked at the Mt. Morgan Mine in Queensland before the outbreak of the Second World War. He believed that this work experience might help him to settle in Sado.
