Taken by his good friend and Endoji neighbour Teruo Shibata, Mr. Funabashi poses in front of a shrine on the Kengamine Peak of Mt. Ontake after a hike in which they had climbed about 1,000 meters. Mt. Ontake is the second highest volcano in Japan and is considered as a sacred place and is a popular destination with both pilgrims and tourists. The bald man behind them had just knelt down to get a better angle for a photograph. This was his fth visit to the peak. His pilgrimage was not only spiritual but also because of his love of nature. A passionate amateur photographer, he had found a peacock butter y, a beautiful and colourful species native to the peak area and one he felt was a testament to the natural beauty of his country, and because of this he felt proud.

良き友人、そして円頓寺でもご近所のシバタテルオ さ ん に 連 れ ら れ て 、舟 橋 さ ん は 約 1 , 0 0 0 メ ー ト ル を 登 り 、 御嶽山の剣ヶ峰にある神社の前でポーズをとった。御 嶽山は日本で2番目に高い火山で、神聖な場所とされ ており、巡礼者や観光客に人気の観光地でもあった。 彼らの後ろにいるハゲ頭の男性は、良いアングルから 写真を撮ろうと何度も膝をついていた。彼はこの峰に5 回訪れていた。彼の巡礼は、信仰的な理由だけでなく、 自然への愛からでもあった。熱心なアマチュア写真家 でもあった彼は、孔雀蝶を見つけた。孔雀蝶は美しく色 彩豊かで、御嶽山では峰付近に生息する種だった。彼 は、まさに彼の国の自然の美しさの証しだ、と思った。 そして、それを誇りに感じた。
