Mr. Funabashi went on a six day graduation trip with stops in Osaka, Oita, Beppu, Unzen and Nagasaki. This photo sees him (centre) with a friend in front of the signage for the Umi Jigoku (Sea Hell) hot spring in Beppu. Another classmate of his, one not so familiar with him, stands to one side biting his thumb and contemplating. It had taken 800 km to come and see this cobalt blue boiling hot pool, but why? Yes, he thought, it was spectacular, but what was its meaning for the graduation trip? He was a quiet student and did not have many close friends at school. Amongst the steam and the strong scent of sulphur, he began to recall every single genuine conversation he had with his classmates.

舟橋氏は6日間の卒業旅行で、大阪、大分、別府、雲仙そ して長崎に滞在した。この写真は彼(中心)とその友人 が、別府の海地獄の看板の前で撮ったものだ。同級生 の中には、あまり知らない人もいて、片手で親指を噛ん で、じっと見つめている。このコバルトブルーの沸騰す る熱いプールを見に来るのに800kmもかかってしまっ た。でも、どうして?そう、見応えがあると思っていたの に、卒業旅行にはどんな意味があったのだろう?彼はお となしい生徒で、学校には仲のいい友達があまりいな かった。蒸気と強い硫黄の臭いの中で、彼は過去に友人 と交わしたありとあらゆる会話を思い出し始めていた。。
