Taken in the old Fujikyu Kanko Hotel, which once stood in Aoi, Nagoya, this photo shows Ms. Takagi’s sister with her classmate cooling themselves on a hot summer day. The hotel was popular among local residents as a recreational facility. Behind the girls are two brothers from the nearby Daikancho neighbourhood who are making themselves at home. They both went to the Aoi Elementary School which had celebrated its 50th anniversary a few years previously. Then they had to learn a new school song which the younger brother didn’t quite understand. Particularly what it was meant by “Half a Century, Light Continues” as the school buildings were very modern in style and to him this didn’t match his idea of “half a century”.

かつて名古屋市の葵にあった藤久観光ホテルで撮影 さ れ た こ の 写 真 は 、暑 い 夏 の 日 に 、高 木 さ ん 姉 妹 と 彼 女たちの同級生が涼んでいる様子を写している。この ホテルは、地元住民の間で、レクリエーション施設とし て人気があった。少女たちの後ろには、近所の代官町 出 身 の 兄 弟 が い て 、く つ ろ い で い る 。彼 ら は 数 年 前 に 創立50周年を迎えた名古屋市立葵小学校に通ってい た。弟にとっては少しだけ難しかったのだが、彼らは創 立50周年を記念して新しくなった校歌を学ばなければ な ら な か っ た 。特 に 、建 物 が と て も 近 代 的 な 様 式 だ っ たので、「半世紀、光は続く」という歌詞の「半世紀」とい う部分が、彼のイメージとは違って混乱してしまった。
