The Takagis went for a short summer vacation to Mt. Norikura. Taken during a stop on the journey their elder daughter poses in front of an old teahouse in Takayama. The man working behind Ms. Takagi in the photo is securing the large teahouse sign for the typhoon season. A year before severe tropical storm Polly brought extremely heavy rainfall to Gifu. This heavy rain caused a landslide in Shirakawa which pushed two buses into the Hida River. This resulted in a large number of casualties. The accident was thought to be the most serious bus accident to have occured in Japan. That one of the victims was a friend of his daughter’s schoolteacher still bought him pain from time to time.

高木さん一家は、夏の短い休暇に乗鞍岳へ旅行に行っ た。その旅の途中で立ち寄った高山の古いお茶屋さん の前で、長女がポーズをとっている。この写真に写って いる高木さんの後ろで働いている男性は、台風の季節 に備えてお茶屋さんの大きな看板を補強していた。こ の前の年には、昭和43年台風7号(国際名:ポリー)が、 岐阜県に猛烈な豪雨をもたらしていた。この豪雨によ って、白川では土砂崩れが発生し、2台のバスが飛騨川 に飲み込まれ、多数の死傷者がでた。この事故は、日本 で起こった最も悲痛なバス事故だと思われていて、そ の被害者のひとりが彼の娘が通っていた学校の教師の 友人だったので、今でも時折、胸が痛んでいる。
