Various activities had been developed for the Endoji Shopping Street’s Tanabata Festival celebration. This photo is of an ice sculpture contest where craftsmen carved pieces on the spot while the audience enjoyed art that refreshed them on a hot summer day. The photographer on the left is an amateur and was taking a picture of a young lady in a oral dress standing opposite (but not visible in this photo) who was framed by the forelegs of anice unicorn. He thought this would be his masterpiece, a unique mix of winter and summer symbols which he was unlikely to capture in one frame during the Hokkaido snow festivals that he visited.

円頓寺商店街の七夕まつりでは、様々な活動が展開さ れ た 。こ の 写 真 は 氷 の 彫 刻 コ ン ク ー ル の も の で 、暑 い 夏の日に、職人がその場で彫刻をし、観客たちがアート を楽しみながら納涼している。左の写真家はアマチュ アで、向かいに立っている(ここには写っていない)花 柄のドレスを着た若い女性が、氷のユニコーンの前足 の間にいる写真を撮っていた。彼はこれが自分の最高 傑作になると思った。なぜなら、彼が訪れたさっぽろ雪 まつりの期間中でも写真におさめることができそうも ない、冬と夏のシンボルが混ざり合ったユニークなも のになったからだ。
