This photo was taken when Mr. Yaokichi Fujita visited Mt. Mihara, a volcano on Izu Oshima Island. In the background the man in the white shirt on the left is discussing with his cameraman and a local villager shooting arrangements for the coming week. He had come from Tokyo to produce a television documentary about the island. He had rst become interested in the island after reading that jumping into the volcano had become an epidemic after two young women had committed suicide there in the 1930s. The island had also become famous again after Seicho Matsumoto’s book, Black Fog over Japan, which investigated the cause of a plane crash on Mt. Mihara in 1952.

これは、藤田彌雄吉氏が伊豆大島にある火山の三原山を訪れた時の写真だ。後ろの左側では、白いシャツを 着た男性が、カメラマンそして地元の村人と来週の撮 影をどう手配するかについて話し合っている。彼は、そ の島についてのドキュメンタリーテレビを制作するた めに、東京から来ていた。1930年代にふたりの若い女 性が自殺をした後、火山に飛び込むことが流行りにな ったと知って、彼は初めてこの島に興味を持った。この 島は、1952年の三原山に飛行機が墜落した「もく星号 墜落事故」の原因を調査した松本清張の著作「日本の 黒い霧」で、改めて有名になった
