Once every few years, heavy snowstorms would hit the northeastern area of Hokkaido, Japan, resulting in record high snowfall. This photograph in page 13 in the International News section was taken in Engaru Machi, Hokkaido. While the Meteorological Agency warned that the bad weather would last, this lady in the photograph has just finished her grocery shopping. She may be living within a walking distance from CO-OP, a local supermarket. It is just after noon, but it is already getting dark and the visibility is poor due to the heavy snowstorm. She dressed carefully to cover the whole body except her eyes. Now more than 50 cm of snow has built up to knee height, she can only walk very slowly.
