When this postcard was made senior elementary education (the equivalent to junior high today) was not free and, as such, was only for those privileged enough to afford it. This school building was grand by local standards and the gentlemen standing at the front were patrons and leaders in their community. Although a school photo it was also intended to demonstrate their pride and wealth. However the woman teacher at the back right hand side did not think this way, even though she also came from a well-off family. She had attended a senior high school for girls, which aimed to train women to become caring wives and mothers. Smoking was also taught as part of their etiquette lessons. She thought though that the goal of education was to advance the nation. So when she graduated she took up a teaching position in this remote location, far from the Hiroshima Women’s Higher Normal School.
當時的高等小學校(相當於現今的初中)，並不如一般小學校免費，校舍是明治時期在 當地較具規模的建築物，照中前列人物是學校的贊助人和地方領袖，該影像代表着他 們自豪的財富和地位。但在後排右邊的女教師，卻是一位有理想而不看重財富的人。 她出身優裕之家，在女子高校唸書，但那裡的辦學目的只是培育賢妻良母，甚至還包 括教導抽煙的禮儀。但她認為教育是為了令民族先進，所以在廣島女子高等師範學校 畢業後，她自願來到這偏遠的地方任教。

当時の高等小学校(現在の中学校に相当)は無料ではなく、余裕がある特権者のた めだけのものだった。この学校の建物は地方ではとても大きなもので、正面に立っ ている男性は、事実、地方の権力者だった。これは学校の写真ではあるが、その実、 この時代の誇りと豊かさを示したものでもあるのだ。しかしながら、右側後ろの女 性教師は、自身が裕福な家庭の出身であるにもかかわらず、それに誇りを感じては いなかった。彼女は、良妻賢母を育てることを目的とした高等女学校に通い、喫煙 もエチケットの一部として教えられた。しかし、彼女は教育の目標は先進国になる ためのものだと考えていた。そこで彼女は、広島女子高等師範学校を卒業後、この 遠隔地にある学校の教職員に赴任したのだ。
