This photo was taken during the opening ceremony of the Kiyotsu Bridge on National Highway 117. The bridge connects the villages of Tsunan and Tokamachi. The bridge was the result of the Japan Inferiority Remodeling Policy that had been promoted by Tanaka Kakuei, the previous Prime Minister. Before the construction of the bridge travel between the two villages had been much more difficult. As a result of this the inhabitants of both villages came to take part in the ceremony. The person leading the parade was also from one of the villages. The Chief priest of the shrine had invited him to take the lead as he was tall and well built. In the legend, Sarutahiko Ōkami, the god of the road, was seven feet tall. The farmer felt honoured to be selected to take this important part in the celebration.
這是國道 117 號線清津大橋的啟用儀式。這條橋接連了津南和十日町，可算是前首相 田中角榮日本列島改造政策的成果。在這條橋建成前，居民都需要繞遠路，所以這天 兩地的居民都來參加開幕儀式。帶面具的領頭人也是本地的村民，由於他身材高大， 所以此地神主邀請了他來擔任猿田彦大神的角色。傳說中猿田彦大神身高七尺多，是 守護街道的神。能夠在祭典中，擔任這個重要的角色，他也甚感榮幸。

国道 117 号線清津大橋の開通によって、津南と十日町が結ばれることになった。こ の橋は、第 64・65 代内閣総理大臣田中角栄が主張した「日本列島改造論」の成果 のひとつである。清津大橋ができるまで、住民たちは長い時間をかけて二地点を移 動しなければいけなかった。だからその開通式には住民のほとんどが参加した。パ レードの先頭に立ったのは近くの村の農夫だった。背が高く、体格がすこぶるよい という理由で、ひとりの宮司が彼をその役割に推薦したのだった。ある神話の中で 巨大な身体を持つ猿田彦大神は、道路の安全を守る神として信仰されている。その 農夫も、式典に参加できることを誇らしく感じていた。
