On 9 October 2012, 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman while riding her school bus home in Swat, Pakistan. Her schoolmates, Kainat Riaz and Shazia Ramzan, were also injured. All three survived and later fled Pakistan for safety and to continue their education.
