On 9 October 1976, violence broke out among fans during a friendly match between Aston Villa and Glasgow Rangers in Birmingham. A youth was critically injured with stab wounds, four police officers were hurt, and 50 arrests were made. The match was abandoned at 53 minutes with Villa leading 2–1.
