On 9 October 1963, at 10:39 pm, a massive landslide struck the newly constructed Vajont Dam, 100 km north of Venice, triggering a megatsunami that overtopped the dam. The disaster destroyed several villages and towns below, killing around 2,000 people. The dam was never used, and its reservoir was drained.
