On 9 October 1942, more than one hundred B-17 Flying Fortress and B-24 Liberator of the U.S. Eighth Air Force were dispatched from the U.K. to bomb Lille, France, on its first mission. Poor bombing accuracy resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
